<Character Design Profile - Fei Lin>
Our artist digs into early designs of the witch, Fei. And talks about her transformation from a scrappy, childish teen, to the easy going young adult she is now
<Phase 1 - Scrappy Child>
The original setting for Rocket of Whispers was much bleaker than it is now, and so we needed Fei (known as Fang at the time) to look tattered, like keeping herself tidy was a luxury, so everything about her was kind of scrappy. She was also younger at the time, which made her look very boyish.
<Phase 2 - He's a She>
Asian names often don't sound the way they intend to in English, so a very feminine name like Fang would sound like a pet wolf without the surname to provide context. Additionally, her tomboyish looks really mislead early Western playtesters into thinking she was a boy, so we started with making her hair longer.
<Phase 3 - Ponytail>
As a rocket engineer, having long hair can pose a safety hazard. So we tied her hair up, and added a few years to her age to make her look more mature and fitting of her position as a religious figure. Thus we ended up with the Fei you know today!
